HILTON POND NORTH

A big snow in mid-January 2025 blanketed Hilton Pond North with white stuff, including Hanging Rock (above). Affectionately named after a similar outcropping in Monroe County WV, the rock juts from the landscape along the north side of our driveway. A sheltered area beneath the overhang almost always stays dry and would be great place for a campsite—or a bear den!

Hilton Pond North in Ashe County NC (see maps above) is about 108 aerial miles due north of our previous home at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History in York SC, and about 4.25 miles south of the Virginia line—with Tennessee's border not far to the west. Our new cabin and 35+ acres at 3,000' elevation are a little northeast of Lansing, with the county seat of Jefferson about eight miles south. That town and neighboring West Jefferson have a combined population of around 3,000; the total county population is shy of 27,000. The Jeffersons are 15 minutes away on good roads with a full hospital, groceries, restaurants, and shopping including Lowes, Tractor Supply, and Walmart. West Jefferson, in particular, is a vibrant little community with nice restaurants and active arts and conservation organizations. Despite how near we are to civilization, such things seem quiet and far away.

In this north-facing winter photo taken from near Phipps General Store on Silas Creek Road—with Landmark Baptist Church at lower right—a close look through the trees at upper left will reveal the roofline of our residential cabin at Hilton Pond North.
